  • Lonavala, Maharashtra: hills and waterfalls between Mumbai and Pune, at their greenest in the monsoon (June to September). Pleasant through winter too.
  • Mahabaleshwar, Maharashtra: viewpoints, strawberry farms in winter and cool weather. Best October to May.
  • Alibaug, Maharashtra: beaches and a fort reached by ferry from Mumbai. Best October to March.
  • Goa: beaches in the north, quieter coves in the south, plus Old Goa's churches. Best November to February.

South India

  • Coorg, Karnataka: coffee estates, Abbey Falls and misty drives, a few hours from Bengaluru and Mysuru. Best October to March.
  • Pondicherry: French Quarter streets, cafés, the promenade and nearby Auroville. Best October to March.
  • Munnar, Kerala: rolling tea gardens and cool hills. Best September to March.
  • Ooty, Tamil Nadu: the Nilgiri Mountain Railway, botanical gardens and lakes. A good summer escape; pleasant from October to June.
  • Hampi, Karnataka: boulder landscapes, temple ruins and sunsets from Hemakuta Hill. Best October to February.
  • Gokarna, Karnataka: quieter beaches and coastal walks. Best October to March.

East and North East India

  • Darjeeling, West Bengal: tea gardens, the toy train and Kanchenjunga views from Tiger Hill at sunrise. Best March to May and October to November.
  • Gangtok, Sikkim: monasteries, MG Marg and day trips into the mountains. Best March to May and October to December.
  • Shillong, Meghalaya: lakes, cafés and live music, with Cherrapunji's waterfalls nearby. Pleasant from October to April; waterfalls are fullest in the monsoon.
  • Puri, Odisha: a long beach, the Jagannath Temple, and the Konark Sun Temple nearby. Best October to February.
